The passive is used to show interest in the person or object that experiences an action rather than the person or object that performs the action.

Forming the passive

The passive in English is composed of two elements:
the appropriate form of the verb ‘to be’ + past participle

Active sentence: John builds a house.

Passive sentence: A house is built by John.

Examples

Present simple

Active sentence: John builds a house.

Passive sentence: A house is built by John.

Past simple

Active sentence: John built a house.

Passive sentence: A house was built by John.

Present perfect

Active sentence: John has built a house.

Passive sentence: A house has been built by John.

Future – will

Active sentence: John will build a house.

Passive sentence: A house will be built by John.
